What Is a Prosthesis?

Prosthetics involve the use of artificial limbs (prostheses) to restore function, mobility, and/or body image. The prosthesis must be a unique combination of appropriate materials, alignment, design, and construction to match the functional needs of the individual.

UNDERSTANDING THE FUNCTIONING OF AN ARTIFICIAL LIMB

An artificial prosthesis works with the help of numerous cables that are installed to replicate muscular stimulation. At Hager Orthopaedic Clinics we work with clients of all activity levels and ages and have experience making prostheses for all amputation levels, including:
Our prosthetists keep up to date with the latest advances in prosthetic technology.

CARING FOR YOUR PROSTHETICS

It is important to take good care of your prosthetic limb. Keeping it clean and hygienic at all times makes it last much longer and work more efficiently. Following proper cleaning and sanitizing your prosthetic limb regularly saves you from large expenses related to its replacement and repair. Avoid cleaning it with any kind of chemical cleaning substance, as it can corrode the metal and cause irreversible damage. Your prosthetic limb may not support strenuous activity. So, it’s important to take care of the amount of physical activity that your limb can handle. If your limb is not designed for use in water, do not use it in water. There is nothing that can damage a limb more than negligent usage. For more information on our prosthetics services in Kelowna, read the FAQs.

I Recently Had an Amputation, What Happens Next?

1. The first step is to call Hager Orthopaedic Clinics and book an appointment to meet with your prosthetist to discuss your needs and goals. The prosthetist will look at your amputation site and will do some functional tests to determine your strength and flexibility.
2. Often you will be given a compression garment to wear or a hard protector will be made to protect the amputation site and prevent swelling while you heal.
3. Once your incision has healed, the prosthetist can take a cast of your leg. The cast is then removed and filled up with plaster so that an exact replica of your leg is created.
4. The prosthetist will modify the model of your leg based on their assessment of your skin, musculature, and any sensitive areas.
5. When they are satisfied with the model, hot plastic is vacuum-formed over the model. This clear plastic creates what is called a “prosthetic socket”.
6. The prosthetic socket is attached to other prosthetic components (such as feet, knees, hands, and adaptors) to make a complete leg or arm. At this stage the mechanics are usually exposed so that the prosthetist can make adjustments to improve your walking or comfort level. This is the trial prosthesis period.
7. You will use the trial prosthesis for the first part of your rehabilitation. The set-up of the trial prosthesis allows the prosthetist to make adjustments as your body changes and rehabilitation proceeds. As the swelling from the operation goes down, it is common for the fit of the prosthesis to change.
8. Once you and your prosthetist are happy with the fit and function of your prosthesis then a definitive prosthesis can be made. The definitive prosthesis can be made with a cosmetic cover or the mechanics can be left uncovered. It is your choice how you would like your finished leg or arm to look.
9. Over the years you will need occasional adjustments, parts replaced, and new prostheses made. Your prosthetist will be able to help you with this when the time comes.
